Business Continuity Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity utilising SIP Trunking Solutions Companies large and small can be equally affected by a disaster and the financial consequences on the business can be immense. So much so that long term disasters, floods and fires can force companies out of business. We appreciate there are different types of disaster, each with varying consequences. For instance a fire at a local chemical factory might mean a short-term evacuation; a building flood might mean a few days of disruption, but the aftermath of a fire could be long term. Finding a new office building, for permanent or temporary accommodation can take time and you need to sort out this location detail before you can give BT a supply address. Then there is the lead-time for your PBX reseller to provide you with a replacement phone system. SIP Trunking with Standard Disaster Recovery Our SIP Trunking solutions include a standard disaster recovery solution. Within minutes 3 of being advised by you of the disaster situation, all company2 DDI numbers will be redirected to a specified alternate number3. The alternate numbers can be an employee’s mobile number, home numbers or alternate corporate office locations. SIP Trunking with Enhanced Disaster Recovery – BUSINESS CONTINUITY The Business Continuity Solution is designed for companies who need to ensure they can continue to operate effectively through a long-term disaster situation. Whilst our Standard Disaster Recovery Solution is ideal for short-term disaster, a business cannot fully function for long periods, or effectively, with calls being answered on employees’ mobiles. With our Business Continuity Solution, once delete we are advised of the disaster we will quickly instigate the Standard Disaster Recovery feature of diverting calls to alternate numbers. At the same time we will activate a hosted PBX solution and dispatch handsets to pre defined locations4. This can be another corporate office; employee’s home addresses or anywhere the unit can be plugged into an IP connection and gain Internet access. Once the unit has Internet access it will register to our hosted PBX service with the same extension number as your office extension and with the ability to receive your DDI calls. Having the same extension numbers makes contact people and transferring calls as easy as possible. The Business Continuity Solution provides the users with all the features of a standard PBX including: Voicemail, Hunt Groups, Diverts, Transfer, Operator. What else does SIP Trunking offer the enterprise? The convergence of voice and data in the enterprise sector has been driven by the improvements in VoIP technology and the development of IP enabled PBX's. Companies that have installed IP enabled PBX's have the ability to converge voice and data across their LAN, by installing IP Handsets, and across the WAN with IP enabled trunks. Whilst companies have embraced convergence across their LAN infrastructure very few are utilising the IP Trunking capabilities of IP enabled PBX's other than for communication between head office and remote/branch offices.

SIP Trunking for IP Enabled PBX Figure 1, shows how an IP enabled PBX connects using SIP Trunking. Incoming and outgoing calls are routed via the SIP Trunking connection. The dotted red line shows how a blend of SIP Trunks and Standard ISDN or Analogue lines can be used to provide an element of resilience but this is subject to the capabilities of the IP PBX. The SIP Trunking connection is shown connected to our SIP Proxy via our own on-net Voice Only DSL Connection. Other ways of connecting to our service include: over the internet, but this is not recommended, or over a Quality of Service (QoS) managed converged network (MPLS). SIP Trunking for NON IP Enabled PBX NON IP Enabled PBX’s connect to the SIP Trunking service using a Gateway. Gateways can be provided in the following formats and therefore a solution can be found for all NON IP Enabled PBX’s: Analogue to IP, ISDN2 to IP and ISDN30 to IP"ISDN30 to IP" gateway. Retaining any ISDN30, ISDN2 or Analogue circuit provides no real benefit as a company’s telephone number and DDI numbers can be ported to our network, this is a must if you want to benefit from the Disaster Recovery and/or Business Continuity services. All calls, incoming and outgoing, can be provided over the SIP Trunking service.
